When you begin practicing how to putt, start out with your best foot forward and confidence brimming inside of you; there really is no better way to putt successfully.  Your positive attitude will go a long way in sending the ball at a good clip along the green.  Lack of confidence will only result in a wobbly ball falling well short of the mark.

Here are some tips on practicing how to putt correctly to build confidence and become a great putter.

The first step in practicing how to put is to choose a golf course with a practice green and a hole that is reasonably flat.  Every trip out to the course should be to practice putting in the direction of this hole.  As you feel your skill level increasing move up to a more challenging hole and so on always moving forward.  Try to always visit the course at a time when it is not very busy, in this way you can have your chosen spot to yourself.

Try placing the ball on the low side of the hole, approximately one foot from the hole; you will be putting uphill when you putt into the hole from this location.  You aim should be centered on the back of the cup and your shot aggressive; put all fear of fluffing the shot right out of your head.

When practicing how to putt you should always make use of your pre-putting routine.  Read the green and take time to refine your routine.  Always putt from wherever the ball comes to rest on a missed putt.  In this way you will be playing in a manner similar to playing a regular round of golf.  What is important is that you don’t stop till the ball falls into the cup!

Upon successfully completing one putt return to your original position of one foot below the hole.  Now step back from the hole approximately one foot in distance; you are now two feet from the hole when you start to put.  Now you will follow all the previous steps to putt the ball into the cup, including reading the green, following and refining your pre-putting routine and putting with an aggressive style.

You will continue practicing how to putt, using the techniques detailed above until you have completed putting from 18 positions.  Each position will become progressively more difficult to putt from and in effect you would have simulated an 18 hole game.  Your aim should be to take 36 or less strokes for every practice session.
